The Nurse's Role in Global Health


Program Overview

Study in Ireland during the summer of 2018 alongside Longwood students and faculty. Students will focus on global health policy and the social determinants of health, and explore the role of the professional nurse in terms of advocacy and influence globally. Visits to local hospitals and meetings with nurses will allow participants to gain a new perspective on global health while experiencing life in Ireland.
Course Description

NURS 495: Nursing Topics: The Nurse's Role in Global Health: Students will learn about global health and related policies and issues from the perspective of an RN. The focus of this course is on improving health and achieving equality in health for all people worldwide. It includes and exploration of health issues that transcend borders and includes health problems that have a global, political, and economic impact. The focus of the nurse in care as well as advocacy is explored. 


This course is open to all Longwood students and majors. 


Students will stay in hotels.

Program Costs

Program fees (which include airfare) are expected to be about $4,200. Tuition is billed separately.

Scholarships and Grants

The Office of International Affairs offers three scholarships:

  • Lancers Abroad Scholarship: up to $500 for short-term programs or $900 for semester programs
  • Presidential Scholarship: up to $2,000 for semester-long programs in which participants are studying in non-Anglophone countries (generally reserved for foreign language majors, but students taking courses in the host language are also encouraged to apply).
  • Global Engagement Scholarship: up to $1,200 for those participating in a faculty-led program; applicants must be Pell Grant recipients to be eligible (including Honors)

Honors students are eligible for separate funding through the Cormier Honors College. Contact Jessi Znosko to get started.
