Spend your semester living and learning in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh! Designed for students from all academic backgrounds, the Semester in Edinburgh program is the perfect chance to earn credits toward your degree while immersing yourself in Scottish culture.

When class is in session, you'll choose from a unique mix of flexible and diverse courses in English at CIEE Edinburgh and CIEE's renowned partner institution, the Edinburgh Napier University (Napier), where you can choose courses across five different schools: Business, Arts and Creative Industries, Computing, Science, and Healthcare. You may also enroll in courses with a local flavor, like business, politics, cuisine, or sustainability initiatives.

Excursions & Activities

  • Visit Edinburgh's Calton Hill; the hill is a hundred meters above sea level and gives you a beautiful view over Edinburgh and The Firth of Forth; Edinburgh's Calton Hill is home to a number of well-known Scottish monuments constructed in a classical style, making the hill known as the “Athens of the North” 
  • Visit the National Museum of Scotland, which has an extensive collection of Scottish antiquities, culture, science, technology, history, and natural history 
  • Visit the Royal Yacht Britannia & Leith to appreciate the ship that was the official means of transportation for the British Royal Family by sea 
  • Visit the Underground Vaults; the infamous South Bridge Vaults formed in the arches of the South Bridge and are actually 19 small rooms where taverns, workshops, and storerooms were located for the first 30 years after the bridge opened in 1788

Projects

Internships: There are plenty of options to earn credit and beef up your resume with international experience in the Scottish working market. Help improve logistics and customer relations, build finance reports in Excel, analyze competitors, develop marketing plans, audit local companies, and more. Students applying for an internship are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.

Directed Independent Research: Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by the CIEE Center Director and home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Edinburgh or Scotland.  

Service-learning Projects:?Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need.
