Core Courses

Biomedical Engineering in Scandinavia
Fall/Spring, 3 Credits

Engineer tools for biomedical discovery. This course explores the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge technologies instrumental in advancing the biomedical sciences. Featuring current developments in Stockholm and the Nordic region, the course incorporates Field Studies with real-life examples from academia and industry, to explain, analyze, and evaluate engineering principles behind technology design. Topics may include medical devices, biomedical imaging, biomechanics, nanotechnologies, stem cell and tissue engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, health informatics, and omics. Through a collaborative project, you will distill your learnings from local researchers and industry partners while utilizing engineering principles to propose novel technologies within the field.


Engineering Sustainable Environments in Scandinavia
Fall/Spring, 3 Credits

This engineering course explores the development of tools and technologies to protect and restore environmental systems sustainably, using contemporary Scandinavian case studies. We assess local environmental impacts of human activities relating to water consumption, waste production, transportation, energy, air quality, heat, and urban ecosystems, applying methods, techniques and modelling to describe, quantify, and solve environmental problems through collaborative engineering solutions. The course is problem-based and experiential, with course-integrated travel throughout the region, and hands-on projects with real-world applications.

This program travels on Study Tours to the following destinations:

Biomedical Engineering in Scandinavia:

  • Week-Long Study Tour: Denmark-Norway
  • Core Course Week: Sweden

Engineering Sustainable Environments in Scandinavia:

  • Week-Long Study Tour: Finland (Fall) or Iceland (Spring)
  • Core Course Week: Sweden

Early in the semester, you delve into your academic focus during Core Course Week, in which you travel on a short Study Tour for three days in Sweden, combined with a two-day seminar in Stockholm. Later in the semester, you travel again with your Core Course on a week-long Study Tour in Europe.

While on tour, theories learned in the classroom come to life by meeting with professionals and experts in your field who contribute to furthering your understanding of course topics. Study Tours are hands-on and experiential, combining theory with practice, and expose you to additional cultural perspectives. You have the opportunity to visit sites and experts in your field of interest that you may not otherwise have access too.

Prerequisites

Two courses in math, plus a total of five courses within engineering, basic science (biology, chemistry, physics), and/or computer science, all at university level. At least one of these courses should be an engineering course.
