WHY STUDY IN ROME?
An ancient but cosmopolitan city, Rome is more than 3,000 years old. Modern apartments and businesses are located side-by-side with historic fountains and ancient ruins in this city of 2.8 million residents. As a top tourist destination and top study abroad location, Rome is one of the world’s most-visited cities and a vibrant European business center. Walk by ancient Roman city walls, stop for a quick espresso, and admire spectacular works of art—all on your way to class.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Mild temps are ideal for exploring Rome’s magnificent treasures—and how they reflect more than 2,000 years Italian history. Fill an elective or requirement as you examine the role of art in politics, and investigate the ways various people and groups have used literature, cinema, architecture and visual arts for influence. Learning comes to life with visits to the prestigious American Academy, Vittoriano Museum Complex, Esposizione Universale Romana District, and more.

Italian Art, Power, and Influence
Art and culture reflect the society they stem from, and at the same time they can be vehicle for political messages and even play a role in international relations. This course will explore how the “soft power” of art—including literature, cinema, architecture, and visual arts in general—can be leveraged by individuals, groups, or governments as they promote their ideas and values for political gain and influence. Students visit famous monuments, museums, and architectural sites that showcase more than 2,000 years of Italian history through its great artists and leaders. (3 U.S. semester credit hours)
